Safe and sound

Well equipped at Learnie

To help you choose the route that's right for your ability all routes at the Mountain Bike centres in the Highlands are graded. An explanation of the grading system is given on our trail grades page. We've extra advice on riding safely in the wilds including a "mind yer heid" podcast and, if you're riding in the forest, you should also follow the forest cycle code.

It’s also worth bearing the following in mind when you’re biking here to ensure you get the most out of your trip:

  • Make sure that your bike is well serviced and up to the job for the route you plan to do
  • Always wear a good quality helmet when biking – get one that’s ANSI or SNELL certified
  • Gloves, and elbow and knee pads are also a worthwhile investment for all types of mountain biking
  • Mountain biking is not the same as traditional cycling. It’s inherently risky, so the best way to stay safe is by knowing your limits, skills and experience and being aware of what's going on around you
  • Get some biking lessons, update your skills for the trails and build confidence
  • Take some time to check out the trailhead grading information (where this is available) BEFORE riding a trail Ask yourself the following questions:
    • Am I confident about what the grading means?
    • Do I have enough experience for doing this trail?
    • Are there any detours I need to remember?
  • Get a trail/route map either from a website or the biking centre (if available)
  • Take key equipment with you i.e. spare inner tube(s), pump, tyre levers, multi-tool with chain link extractor, etc
  • If you’re downhill biking use an appropriate bike, full face helmet, goggles and body armour. This equipment will not protect you fully in the event of a crash – but will prevent superficial injuries
  • Take carb-loaded foods and plenty of refreshments with you on the trail
  • Where a route forks in two different directions, always wait for the rest of your party or run the risk of getting split up.
